1. Middle East
The situation in the Middle East has necessitated a change in the tour schedule. We have replaced our stop in Beirut with a stop in Cairo, and we are working very closely with our contacts both in Egypt and here in Washington. We are sure that it will be a great stop.

We still have a few spaces for fairs only participants. If you are interested, please contact Darryl Calkins at 202-237-0164 or dcalkins@lindentours.com

In the meantime, although we were extremely disappointed to have to postpone our stop in Beirut (we will add it as an option to our India/Gulf tour this spring), we are heartened by the recent cease-fire and our thoughts are with everyone in the region.

2. Fall Recruitment Travel
Everyone here at Linden is ready to get on the road, and we are all looking forward to our tours and to traveling with you. As we begin our final preparations for the upcoming tours, it is always a good idea to keep a few things in mind to help make your recruiting more effective.

• If possible activate your alumni. Students love hearing from other students (especially recent grads) about their experience on campus. In some countries, having an alum at your table at the fair will also help shyer students feel more comfortable in approaching you.
• If you are traveling this fall, make sure that all of your prospects know when and where you will be.
• Be clear about a student’s chance for admission and/or financial aid at your institution. Remember, the Brits and Aussies are offering “on-the-spot” admissions at many of their fairs, so students want to know whether or not they are admissible.
• Talk about money: costs, financial aid, possible on-campus jobs, ways to save money, etc. U.S. universities are very expensive for most students, yet there are many students who have access to funds but do not know how to use and/or stretch those funds for U.S. education.

• For more insight check out these helpful resources:

1. One of the best resources for admissions travelers is the major newspaper in the countries you are visiting. Just go to www.onlinenewspapers.com and choose a country.

2. Check out the International Higher Education Clearinghouse at: http://www.bc.edu/bc_org/avp/soe/cihe/ihec/

3. Finally, the best resources are the students and scholars on your campus. Be sure to pick their brains about what you need to know while traveling in their countries. Wherever you are going, we wish you all safe travels and successful recruiting.

3. Airline Security and Laptop Precautions
As many of you know the recent events in London have precipitated several new restrictions regarding carry on bags. The restrictions are causing more delays than usual, so please be prepared to spend a little more time in airport. Since the restrictions are changing frequently, please check the TSA site for an updated list before you travel.

Laptop precautions to keep in mind while you travel:

• Use passwords with a combination of numbers and letters to prevent unauthorized access to laptops and sensitive data.
• Back-up valuable data before travel to minimize the risk of data loss or lost productivity in case of theft. Since the information is often more valuable than the computer itself, it is important to protect the data as much as possible.
• Invest in asset tracking and recovery software. Absolute Software recommends tools like its CompuTrace, which is embedded in the BIOS of computers.
• Use remote data protection, so sensitive information can be wiped remotely if the laptop is lost or stolen.
• Carry portable storage devices, like external thumb drives, for easy access to data in case luggage is delayed or lost.
• Keep accurate records, including receipts and the computer's make, model, and serial number in a safe place for filing claims.
• Be sure to shut down the laptop, not leave it in standby or hibernate mode, before packing in luggage.

4. 2007 Spring Tours
Planning for the 2007 Spring Tours is well underway and the application is now available on the web site.

In 2007, Linden will combine a three-city tour to India with two stops in the Gulf – Kuwait and Dubai. We hope to add on Beirut to this tour as well.

Our Asia tour begins in Kuala Lumpur, and travels to Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Seoul Shanghai and Beijing.

The Latin America Tour includes San Pedro Sula, Honduras, Guatemala City, Managua, Guayaquil and Bogotá.

Country tours: This coming spring, we will have two one-country tours: one in Brazil and another in Colombia. Please check the web site for more details.

5. News from Linden and Lindenites
Tomorrow is Anita Narayan’s last day with us here at Linden. She begins graduate school at George Washington this semester. While we wish her every success, we will miss her keen eye on our publications and her steadiness and sense of humor on our tours.

At the same time, we welcome Brett Ratchford to Linden. Brett is a native of Michigan and graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in Journalism and International Relations. He has spent the last few years living and teaching in Taiwan and will be traveling to Asia this fall.

Holly Stanton – now Holly Stanton Beardow- recently wed Jim Beardow. The ceremony took place in Battle, England and it was a beautiful ceremony and both Holly and Jim have our best wishes.

Back by popular demand, Ingrid Nelson Al-Sataam is joining Darryl to lead the tour to the Middle East.

Michael Elgarico formerly of Northeastern recently accepted a position at Stanford.

Lawrence Rodriguez formerly of California Lutheran has recently moved to Chicago where he is working at the School of the Art Institute.

Tracey Reza, Bentley, delivered a happy healthy daughter, Yasmeen this July. We hear she drove herself to the hospital. Congratulations – for both the birth and transport.
